How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

By Serra Akyuz10th Grade, Brooklyn Amity School As humans, using the trial and error method to reach a desired goal seems doable, but wouldn’t it be easier if we had a book of instructions that guided us on our way? J. Pierrepont Finch, played by Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe, begins as a window washer with a lot of ambition. He uses a book with step-by-step directions to succeed in the corporate world without any effort, carelessly jeopardizing his virtue as he fabricates his own image to reflect the attributes of others. Consequently, he is very successful and soon finds himself moving from working in the mailroom to becoming vice president of advertising. He meets Rosemary, a sweet girl who instantly falls for Finch. However, Finch soon faces problems as his schemes don’t turn out the way he planned, jeopardizing his relationship with Rosemary and his position at the company. Finch is the heart of the story and Radcliffe nails the role with his dancing, singing and spot-on American accent. He absorbs your attention with his charming character and makes you feel no hate for his immoral acts. How to Succeed tells an eccentric story that reveals some truths about our own successes.
