Imagine being a high school senior girl and turning on your computer to find a video of yourself, taken without your permission, that is available to millions of people worldwide. As Vicky, the main character of my play [I Know What Boys Want], realizes, what is recorded on the web will never go away.
A few months ago I read a story about a high school student who, after discovering an online video of herself drunkenly having sex with several football players, threw herself in front of a subway train. Who was there to stop these kids from filming her or to help this girl out of this situation? When I told my colleague, Joan Kane (currently the director of I Know What Boys Want), about this girl, Joan said, “Penny, write a play.”
So that is the genesis of I KNOW WHAT BOYS WANT.
